Many employers in Asia rely on their candidates’ self-disclosures, but this can lead to incidents such as hiring a candidate with a serious criminal conviction or questionable background. Situations like this occur all around the world. In Singapore, a man was fired from a ride-hailing company after news emerged that he verbally abused a passenger. When they investigated, it was discovered the same employee had been sentenced to a two-year jail sentence for several counts of harassing former clients. It can be hard to imagine the significant costs associated with hires taking place before appropriate screening has been performed, but conducting background checks can secure workplace and employee protection, ensure quality hires and maintain compliance with international background screening regulations and recommendations.
