More than 3,000 doctors will have their backgrounds screened after 56-year-old doctor Zholia Alemi was found to be working as a psychiatrist for the NHS despite not having the required qualifications. Alemi’s fraud was discovered after Carlisle’s News and Star newspaper began an investigation. She was found guilty last month of faking an elderly patient’s will in an attempt to steal her £1.3 million fortune. She had been employed by the General Medical Council (GMC), which did not check her documentation to confirm that she did, indeed, have a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery certificate from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
