What Will European General Data Protection Regulation Mean for Canadian Employers?

Beginning in the spring of 2018, organizations with employees in Europe will need to be compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which replaces the European Union’s Data Protection Directive. With more stringent data protection requirements, it remains to be seen whether the European Community will continue to view Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Document Act (PIPPEDA) as adequate. Canadian businesses should be ready because the enforcement provisions in the GDPF are tough and could levy heavy financial sanctions of up to 4% of the annual worldwide turnover of the organization. It also contains some specific requirements that are not currenty reflected in PIPPEDA.
