Protecting Confidential Information from Untrustworthy Employees

A Massachusetts insurance company thought it had done everything it could to secure confidential information, but learned a hard lesson when it was sued for negligence in its retention of an employee that it thought was trustworthy. Although the employee was fired after leaking information regarding a car accident to an involved person, the company was not in the clear. A witness who claimed the leaked information led to intimidation sued the company for failing to safeguard personal information and for negligent retention and supervision.
