Meaningful Consent Under PIPEDA

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, along with the Offices of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta and British Columbia, recently published the Guidelines for obtaining meaningful consent, an effort to breathe life into the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). The seven principles recommended for organizations seeking meaningful consent for the collection, use or disclosure of personal information from individuals are: 1. Highlight the important elements, 2. Give the individual control, 3. Give the individual a choice, 4. Be innovative and creative, 5. Consider the individuals perspective, 6. Continuously evolve, 7. Be accountable.
