Is There a Drug Problem in the Trucking Industry?

More than 72,000 truck drivers have been taken off US roads since January 2020 because of a drug or alcohol violation and the American Trucking Association says that the industry will need about 160,000 more operators by 2030, mostly because of drivers moving from one company to another. The problem with not filling available jobs is that 90 percent of driver turnover happens within the first 180 days of being hired due to management issues (11 percent) and respect and treatment (11 percent). The Clearinghouse database does a great job of making the roads safer, but those who have a failed drug test can begin the return-to-duty process to get back to work and engage in follow-up testing for the next 12 or more months.
