In an effort to make Canada a more data savvy society, Government of Canada recently responded to a report released by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics (The Committee). The Committee has been reviewing the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Document Act (PIPEDA) since February 2017. Recommendations to update PIPEDA include protecting personal information, the creation of a framework for the right to de-indexing, inclusion of a right of data portability and the importance of privacy by design. There also were several recommendations relating to adequacy status in the context of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a focus on consent, and the designation of powers to the Privacy Commissioner.
