Data Protection Laws Inspired by GDPR Are Spreading Across the World. Is New York Next?

New York has introduced its first data protection law, the Data Shield Act, ensures stricter obligations for companies that process personal data. The limited law aims to ensure that every New York company makes the necessary efforts to ensure a high level of protection of personal data to prevent data breaches. Although the Data Shield Act is a step forward in data protection, New York politicians drafted a Data Privacy Act very similar to the European General Data Protection Regulation earlier this year. Changes to the New York Privacy Act are expected before the bill goes to the last ballot, but the new law should give New York residents much more control over their personal information.
