City of Aiken ‘Bans the Box’ by Removing Criminal History from Job Applications

A “Ban the Box” resolution was unanimously passed by Aiken City Council in South Carolina, removing the box on applications for city government jobs that asks for an individual’s criminal history. Criminal history still will be included in background checks, but this is conducted later in the application process, typically after a conditional offer has been made. According to Eugene White, president of the Aiken County NAACP branch, who presented the proposal to the council, the move “protects the employer from negligent hiring” and makes “sure they are picking the right candidate for the right job.”
