Alameda County DA O’Malley Announces $7.5 Million Settlement with Walgreens

A consumer protection action has been settled in Alameda County against Walgreen Co. The action was brought against Walgreens by two district attorneys after the discovery that the business had employed an individual at multiple bay area pharmacy locations for more than a decade, even though she was not licensed by the Board of Pharmacy. Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley said the case points to the responsibility of the company to “make sure its employees are properly licensed and to complete a thorough background check.” The employee is believed to have performed one or more of the pharmacist-required steps for over 745,000 prescriptions, including more than 100,000 prescriptions for controlled substances.
