In South Africa, demand for criminal and educational background checks remains constant as does the associated risks. According to Ina van der Merwe, CEO of Managed Integrity Evaluation (MIE), criminal checks were the most frequently requested check during the first 10 months of 2017, followed by qualification or educational background checks. According to MIE, the types of qualifications most commonly found on checks to be misrepresented include fraudulent or inconsistent African (33.98%) and International (43.45%) qualifications. Misrepresentation or inconsistencies remains high on National Secondary Qualification (matric pre-1992, at 25.47%), Tertiary Courses (23.17%), National Tertiary qualifications (14.55%) and Umalusi (matric post-1992, at 13.88%).
