Vermont Senate Passes Bill to Legalize Marijuana Use

Vermonts Senate passed a bill in early January to legalize recreational marijuana use, making this the first state to do so through the legislative process rather than a ballot imitative. Governor Phil Scott is expected to sign the bill, which passed the Democratic-controlled Senate by a voice vote. The bill will allow those 21 and older to possess up to one ounce of marijuana, two adult plants and four immature plants beginning on July 1, but it does not clear the way for retail sales of drug. Law enforcement groups in Vermont have criticized the legislation drive, saying the drug poses health risks and creates a danger to those on the road with intoxicated drivers. Five of the first states to legalize the drug have seen more than $484 million generated in tax revenue off marijuana sales.
