Parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers often find it more expensive and have a more difficult time finding childcare for their little ones than those with older children. Part of the reason is the cost providers incur to run a childcare business. It can cost, on average, $1,412 per month to pay for infant care in California. Although free and subsidized childcare programs are available for low-income families, there isn’t enough to reach the majority of eligible kids. Expectant parents should start their search right away, taking into account all options, including both licensed care and unlicensed or license-exempt care, subsidized child care, and Early Head Start. Resource and referral agencies can help families access low-cost, affordable child care.
