The pandemic has caused more than 40 million Americans to lose their jobs and many others now are working from home through remote means, presenting challenges for companies that drug test employees. While most drug testing locations remain open, there are safety concerns when it comes to screening and employees should be prepared to wear masks and follow strict social distancing protocols. Along with the many challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, a 55 percent rise in alcohol consumption has been reported when compared to the same time last year and drug use could be the same. Government agencies have offered guidance for Department of Transportation drug testing during COVID-19 and advises companies, employees and service agents about specific situations surrounding testing or a refusal to undergo screening. Employers should be aware that employees who have been furloughed cannot be tested by the employer while they are not working, but should be tested upon their return to work.
