Most Americans support the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational use, according to a Pew Research Center survey from October 2022, but it does remain a partisan issue. Republicans are more cautious than Democrats about legalizing cannabis for medical and recreational use, with just 45 percent on board, compared to 73 percent of Democrats in support of its legalization. Attitudes are beginning to change in conservative areas, however, with Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, and other states legalizing cannabis for medical use, recreational use, or both.
