The Role of Biometrics in a Post COVID-19 World

Thermal imaging and contact tracing technologies have gained attention as businesses across America begin to reopen their doors post-COVID-19, but there is another solution that should be a part of an employer’s use of security systems: access control, including biometric entry devices. Originally designed to replace traditional access control methodologies in favor of faces and fingerprints, contactless biometrics will likely continue to advance. Functionality and the desire to create a safer environment have replaced the traditional concerns surrounding the cost of biometric technology. With employees likely hesitant to touch things that other people have touched, the development and use of this technology will continue to evolve, with a focus on the challenge of properly storing data, especially given the enactment of Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
