The Pandemic’s Impact on DOT Random Drug Test Refusals

The current verbiage in the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) regulations on random drug tests does not account for the pandemic’s effect on staffing and specimen cups at testing sites. The shortage of both could lead to an automatic positive result for drivers whose tests cannot be completed. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has asked the FMCSA to issue guidance and/or relief to truck drivers facing this situation. Employers can help by working closely with drivers to find a facility that has the staff and products necessary to complete the testing and should consider working with a reputable drug & alcohol testing partner.
