The Importance of Reference Checking – Plus Questions You Need to Be Asking

A reference check can provide hiring managers with meaningful insight into the candidate, including both positive and negative attributes and histories. The process allows employers to verify resumes, cover letters, and interviews, while also opening up an opportunity to learn more about the candidate through other professionals. It is important to use the reference check to gather two business and one character references, but it is crucial to conduct the process properly to reduce the risk of facing legal problems. Remember any information received from references is confidential, communicate with the candidate that a reference check has been sent out, and be careful to only ask questions that are related to the candidate/job position, never about age, disabilities, or national origin. Questions should include those related to candidate/referee relationship; dates of employment, duties and job titles; previous performance; behavior; and reasons for leaving the previous position.
