The Body Shop has become one of the first retail businesses to begin hiring in a way that completely eliminates human bias. Those who successfully complete an apprenticeship will receive employment opportunities and to be eligible, they must answer yes to three simple questions: Can you legally work in the United States? Can you lift over 50 pounds? Can you stand up for up to eight hours? The recruiting style follows that of Greyston Bakery, which, according to CEO Mike Brady, was created as a way to destroy employment barriers. But a Forbes columnist has argued that open hiring replaces one bias with another and that without proper screening or recommendations, organizations are unaware of the quality of their employee’s work and any liabilities their employees may bring into the company upon being hired.
