Opioid Overdose Deaths on the Rise Among Black Americans

Research conducted as part of the HEALing Communities Study has revealed that opioid overdose deaths increased 38 percent among non-Hispanic Black Americans from 2018 to 2019, remaining the same among other race and ethnicity groups. According to Nora D. Volkow, M.D., National Institute on Drug Abuse Director, structural racism has a huge effect on health and can lead to drug use and overdose deaths.
