The NYPD has reached a settlement with the Police Benevolent Association, allowing 30 rookie and probationary officers — who had failed their background checks or psychological exams but were mistakenly hired — to remain in the force. Instead of being fired, they’ll serve an extended 36-month probation during which their failed checks can count against them if misconduct occurs. The officers were initially disqualified during hiring, but still entered the police academy due to errors.
