New Jersey Nursing Homes Let Staff Work Without Required Background Checks, Audit Finds

New Jersey nursing homes frequently failed to complete required employee background checks, a federal audit found. Eleven of 12 homes reviewed lacked full compliance, with 33 of 120 staff members missing checks or documentation. Seventeen worked before screenings finished, and six never had checks at all, raising safety concerns for vulnerable residents. Auditors said weak state oversight and facility procedures caused lapses and recommended stronger monitoring and clearer guidance for compliance.
