Before hiring a nanny, babysitter or caregiver, consider two important steps that should be taken: 1. Conduct a thorough interview and 2. Run a comprehensive nanny background check, which will search for residential history, employment history, criminal history, sex offender registry, driving history, a professional license check and liens and judgments. Throughout the interview, ask things like, “how long have you worked in childcare?” and “what are your strongest qualities?”, as well as a few questions about academic/educational background, personal life, safety questions and age-specific questions. Signs that you’ve made the right decision and hired the right nanny include a happy child, nice comments about the nanny from the child, punctuality, commitment, someone who is proactive and a consistent behavior in the child.
