N.J. Lawmakers Renew Push for Youth Sports Background Checks After Sex Offender Flaws Exposed

New Jersey lawmakers are renewing efforts to require stricter background checks for youth sports coaches after investigations revealed gaps that allowed some offenders to work with children. Reports found that over 100 coaches and sports staff in the state have faced sex-crime accusations since 2015, and many were not flagged by existing screening systems. Legislators are proposing a bill requiring annual criminal background checks for adults working in youth sports to close oversight gaps and strengthen protections for young athletes.
