Research on substance abuse trends from 2014 to 2019, conducted at the University of Washington, shows that people aged 21 to 25 were less likely to consume alcohol, nicotine, and non-prescription opioids. The study abstract stated that the “implantation of legalized nonmedical cannabis coincided with decreases in alcohol and cigarette use and pain reliever misuse.” E-cigarette use, however, did increase among the age group after 2016.
