Kansas Bureau of Investigation Director Tony Mattivi urged lawmakers to pass a bill requiring mandatory state and national fingerprint-based criminal background checks for all public and private school employees and volunteers every five years. Currently, only licensed teachers must be checked, leaving gaps for other staff. The proposal, Senate Bill 246, aims to enhance student safety by closing those gaps. Applicants would pay the $57 check fee unless districts cover it.
