An independent U.S. journalist and military veteran, Laura Jedeed, tested U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) hiring process at a career fair in Texas and said allegedly she was effectively offered a job as a deportation officer with minimal vetting. She said that she had a brief interview, never completed the required paperwork or a background check, and likely failed a drug test — yet her alleged application status showed she had been hired. Her account raises concerns about ICE’s recruitment standards. ICE and DHS said that no formal job offer was made.
