A bill in Iowa that is gaining momentum in the Iowa Legislature could mandate all workers hired in the state to go through additional background checks to ensure their legal-immigration status. In addition, businesses would be required to certify all legal residency of their employees with the federal E-Verify program or risk losing their licenses. Although under federal law, E-Verify is an optional part of the hiring process, 22 states have enacted legislation that makes it a requirement, according to Migration Policy Institute.
