Howard County Firefighters No Longer Face Sanctions for Off-Hours Use of Medical Cannabis

Firefighters in Howard County will no longer face disciplinary action for their off-duty use of medical cannabis. County officials and representatives of the firefighter’s union reached an agreement in December on a revised countywide substance abuse policy. The new policy will take effect on January 31, 2026. Under the revised policy, county firefighters must report their patient status with Human Resources, and they must refrain from using cannabis within 12 hours of reporting for duty.
