How to Run a Background Check on a Babysitter & Give Yourself Some Peace of Mind

It can be scary to leave a child home with a babysitter for the first time, but hiring a legitimate nanny background check company can provide peace of mind since they conduct thorough background checks. Running one on your own is possible, but requires a bit of leg work. Start by asking the individual for their full (legal) name, social security number and driver’s license before using a reputable website to perform the screening and check with the DMV for driving records. The check on child abuse and neglect records and contacting the state’s child protective services are great places to start, but keep in mind that each state is different. Be sure to make reference checks part of your nanny background check process to make sure the babysitter is trustworthy, while requesting a full employment history can help provide a comprehensive picture of the individual.
