Do Organizations Rely on Background Checks Too Much?

Running a comprehensive background check ensures that employers verifies who the candidate says he or she is, but for a small portion of cases, gaps in the system, abuse, and poor oversight are present. The truth is, passing a background investigation is not a guarantee that the employee is law-abiding, psychologically sound, or who he or she claims to be, and it also doesn’t guarantee that the person won’t become problematic in the future. Thirty-six categories of issues have been identified as causing background checks that did not perform as they should have, which can be placed into four broad categories: guile of the job candidate, lack of specific requirements for what should be checked, the fault of the hiring organization, and the fault of the third-party screening provider.
