Background Checks: What You Need to Know

States now will be required to conduct criminal background checks on all childcare employees that work at a licensed, license-exempt, regulated, and registered childcare provider. A comprehensive background check should be conducted on any childcare provider, staff in a childcare facility, family members over the age of 18 living in a family childcare home, and possibly individuals who volunteer in a childcare program. These checks include state criminal and sex offender registries, state child abuse and neglect registry, National Crime Information Center, FBI fingerprint check and National Sex Offender Registry. State requirements can be found by calling a local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) agency.
