Independent Contractors Gain New Rights in NYC Anti-Discrimination Law Update

The New York City Council approved a sweeping change to its employment laws in September when it updated its anti-discrimination rules to include independent contractors. A single-line amendment expanded the decades-old city law that once focused solely on relationships between employers and traditional employees. Effective January 1, 2020, a group of workers that hasn’t even been referenced in the law will be fully covered by it.
