New Jersey state lawmakers have advanced a bill that would require workers’ compensation to cover medical marijuana. Bill A1708 states that “an employer or workers’ compensation insurance carrier or private passenger automobile insurance carrier shall provide coverage for costs associated with the medical use of marijuana.” This raises concerns for insurers and employers given that marijuana remains an illegal controlled substance under federal law. A bill also was passed out to the committee that protects insurers from any state or local retaliation for engaging with marijuana-related businesses.
