71 percent of Hiring Decision-Makers Agree Social Media is Effective for Screening Applicants

A new survey from The Harris Poll, commissioned by Express Employment Professionals, has indicated that 71 percent of hiring decision makers in the United States use social media as an effective way to screen applicants, with 70 percent believing that employers should screen this way. But Jan Riggins, general manager for two Express franchises in Fort Worth, Texas, does not believe using social media as a screening tool is effective and some have argued that it should only be used to validate work history and experience due to the legal ramifications. Now is a great time for job seekers to clean up social media accounts and possibly having a third-party review of content for an unbiased and objective opinion.
