Why Comprehensive Sanctions Screenings are Important to Healthcare Organizations

With Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) standards becoming more stringent, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure effective and regular screening. Employing an individual who is included on the List of Excluded Individuals (LEIE) exclusion list can jeopardize a healthcare provider’s ability to continue federal programs, possibly accruing steep penalties and fines. Effective sanction screenings, which check both federal and state databases, can help providers stay in compliance, mitigating risk by drawing from a multitude of data sources. The OIG recommends healthcare providers screen their employees and contractors monthly to confirm they are not on the OIG’s LEIE or the System for Award Management (SAM).
