This Algorithm Could Make It Easier for Over 73 Million Americans to Get Jobs

In an effort to make it possible for those arrested for or convicted of a crime in the past to secure employment, Teresa Hodge and her daughter, Laurin Leonard, founded Baltimore-based tech startup R3 Score, intended to provide detail and context for employers to make a more informed decision about their hires. Much like a financial analysis tool, the R3 Score provides more accurate assessments of an individual’s background, with a proprietary algorithm tapping numerous data sources, such as open civic data or criminal background databases. A comprehensive picture of a candidate’s background, along with a number similar to a credit score, is provided to the employer who can assess the risk of hiring that person. The risk model doesn’t just look at work and education but includes indicators that show a person has been consistently committed to their future and the well-being of their community.
