On 100th Day in Office, Governor Mills Signs Legislation to Promote Pay Equality

On her 100th day in office, Governor Janet Mills signed LD 278, which promotes pay equality by discouraging employers from basing wages on an employee’s salary history. The governor said “Maine is a better place when we strive to ensure that all citizens are treated equally and fairly.” The legislation, An Act Regarding Pay Quality, prohibits an employer from asking about a prospective employee’s prior wage or salary information until after an offer of employment has been made to the prospective employee. Exceptions are in place for federal and state law that require the disclosure of compensation history for specific employment purposes.
