Two stories of fake degree rackets that discovered almost 40,000 fake degrees and certificates had been issued through schools, colleges, and universities in India came to light in 2021, reinforcing the importance of education verification as part of the hiring process. A few trends in education frauds in India for 2018, 2019, and 2020 have revealed that fake degree submission constituted for nearly 28 percent of education discrepancies in 2020; degrees from fake universities constituted for nearly 27 percent of education discrepancies in 2020; and the BPO industry tops the charts at 10.4 percent in 2020, followed by Private Insurance Companies.
