Although in years past, a candidate’s income information was used to create a compensation package that an applicant would accept, hiring managers are no longer able to access this confidential information. Pay disparity has brought the subject to light and bans on requesting salary information work to close the gender pay gap. As of February 2020, 17 states and 20 local bans were passed to eliminate the use of the salary history question with regard to employment decisions. It is important for businesses to train the hiring team to ensure all parties understand existing salary bans before creating a salary range that is fair for everyone. Assessment testing is a great way for employers to learn about a candidate’s attitudes and behaviors about work, while in-depth interview questions and mock job projects are methods to gather concrete information on the potential employee.
