Deepfakes and Stolen PII Utilized to Apply for Remote Work Positions

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has issued a warning of an increase in complaints reporting the use of deepfakes and stolen Personally Identifiable Information (PII) when applying for a variety of remote work and work-at-home positions. Scammers are particularly focused on work in information technology and computer programming, database, and software-related job functions. Some would allow access to customer PII, financial data, corporate IT databases, and/or proprietary information. Complaints include the use of voice spoofing in which the actions and lip movements of the person seen don’t line up with the audio of the person speaking.
