Australia’s federal privacy watchdog, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), launched its first privacy compliance sweep in January 2026, reviewing the privacy policies of about 60 businesses that collect personal information in person. The review focuses on compliance with Australian Privacy Principle 1.4 to ensure privacy notices are accurate. Entities with non‑compliant policies could face compliance or infringement notices and penalties up to $66,000 under the regulator’s enhanced enforcement powers.
