The Impact of Bad Data on the Background Checking Process

A recent study on criminal records cast doubt on the accuracy of the information that background-checking firms are providing to employers. The research analyzed criminal records comparing official state reports and two private-sector background checks sources. Based on the analysis, private-sector background checks are laden with false-positive and false-negative errors, mismatched data that create false negatives, missing case dispositions that could create incomplete and misleading criminal records and incorrect data that create false positives.
