Four separate employers have reported that Tonya Topel, recently sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison without parole, embezzled from them. The North Kansas City woman pleaded guilty in an embezzlement scheme at SunSource Homes Inc., where she was hired as an office manager and accountant in October 2016. Just a month later she started stealing from the company and continued to do so for more than a year while awaiting sentencing related to embezzling from her previous employer, Construction Benefits Audit Corp. There, she embezzled more than $277,000 for which she will serve eight years in federal prison, running consecutively with her SunSource sentence.
