Evolving since the 1990s, which saw a rise in high-profile cases of workplace violence, as well as an increase in negligent hiring claims, the background screening industry has welcomed technological assistance as new threats have become presented. What once consisted of a one-time background screening process now includes continuous monitoring that reduces risk and makes the workplace safer. With 96 percent of U.S. employers conducting background screens, according to the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), many began to see the value in conducting periodic rescreening, especially high-risk companies. Now, however, background screening companies are introducing “continuous monitoring” products that alerts employers of real-time criminal activity throughout the duration of employment.
