A recent Harris Poll survey found that 70 percent of hiring managers consider screening candidates’ social media profiles to be useful during the hiring process. While there are benefits to incorporating social media into the background screening process, correctly identifying candidates’ social media accounts can be challenging. Compliance with federal, state, and local employment and privacy laws is also a concern for human resources teams. Deciding to include social media in the process can, however, allow the business to meet the expectations of today’s consumers and employees, strengthen the organizational culture and improve employee retention by avoiding a toxic workplace.
