The South Dakota House of Representatives voted 49–13 to require all employers to use E-Verify to confirm new hires’ work eligibility. The system checks I-9 information against federal databases maintained by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. Supporters call the bill common sense, while critics cite burdens and database errors. The measure now advances to the South Dakota Senate for consideration.
