SD Lawmakers Reject Mandatory E-Verify Checks of Worker Citizenship, Immigration Status

South Dakota lawmakers rejected a bill that would have required certain employers to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm the citizenship or immigration status of new hires. The proposal would have applied to businesses with more than 25 employees and required verification within 10 days of hiring. Supporters said it would deter unauthorized employment, while opponents argued it would burden businesses. The Senate ultimately voted down the amended bill, leaving current federal employment verification requirements unchanged.
