Fred GilesBefore joining the background screening industry, James I was (and remains) a private investigator. In the late 1980s he became a licensed private investigator and worked a wide variety of cases to include insurance fraud, domestic surveillance and even spent time undercover investigating drug use in the workplace. He also spent time in various courthouses and government centers obtaining criminal, civil, corporate and other public information documents. In 1993, he left a nationwide investigations firm to start Mohr Information Services, LLC.

One of the things he enjoys about the industry is preparing detailed, highly accurate reports for his clients so that they can make the best-informed decisions possible. He beamed and said, I take great pride in exceeding expectations and delivering before deadline.

James took a moment to share his companys mission: Our mission is to Get it Right, Every Day. He added that the stakes are high for what we do and as I train and instruct my employees we must do our best day in and day out as each and every search is critical.

James noted that on October 1, 2018 the firm will celebrate their 25th year in business during a timeframe when the world changed more with regards to technology than any other time in our planets history. He smiled and said, I look forward to providing my current and future clients with actionable intelligence for another 25 years and beyond.

Talking more about the business, James shared that his intent is to continue to add more geographic locations and more research services to meet the needs of their clients.

He reflected for a moment and then said: My company pours through complex dockets, sentencing agreements and maintains statute books for all states that we cover. Criminal court research is actually very complex and requires a highly trained and skilled workforce to perform it. With rising minimum wages sweeping the country and an industry severely focused on price it creates a great challenge to retain talented court researchers, especially when competing with some fast food chains. An industry so driven by price frequently sacrifices quality.

He proudly exclaimed how hard his employees work on a daily basis and that 25 years ago, he made a choice not to sub-contract out his work product and many of his employees have 10, 15, 18 years experience with the company. He believes that this provides a higher quality product.

As for what the future holds, James foresees a lot more legislation regulating this industry, and he believes that automation, continuous screening and pre-verification of ones resume will become the norm. He also note that with a tight labor market: Employers will need to look more closely at the whole person by investigating the details and not relying solely on the base facts.

Moving the conversation back to him personally he shared that he has just the read The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson. Having grown up around the Pentagon, Capital Hill and politics I am intrigued by the inner workings of our government. I have had opportunities throughout my career to investigate for both parties and truly enjoy the impartiality that investigating affords. Unlike the media; investigators simply report the facts as found and do not offer opinion, conjecture or bias.

The person he would most like to meet is Jeff Bezos. Watching how Amazon has changed the world as we know it. I know it would be a fantastic experience to meet him.

Before closing the interview James shared his favorite quote which came from his dad. As a kid growing up his dad would frequently say prior planning prevents poor performance. James smiled and noted, he uses this phrase in all aspects of his life both professionally and personally. He added, Navigating a small business requires a great deal of planning and strategizing. While you always need back up plans and alternatives, without prior planning the odds of failure are high and the reliance upon luck is risky if not foolhardy.
