The Idaho House of Representatives passed House Bill 704, a measure requiring private employers to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm workers’ legal employment status beginning July 1st, and to prohibit hiring undocumented workers. The bill passed 43-26 after a heated debate, with business groups warning it could hurt employers and others arguing that current federal I-9 rules aren’t enough. Supporters say the law enforces existing requirements. HB-704 now moves to the Idaho Senate.
